For over a decade, a 21-block rezoning initiative has been in the works, the long-awaited plan is the Atlantic Avenue Mixed-Use Plan. This is a rezoning initiative proposed for a 21-block stretch along Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn. The plan proposes allowing higher-density residential and commercial development. If given the green light, the plan would lead to thousands of new housing units, including affordable housing units, new permanent jobs, new community spaces, infrastructure improvements, and many other benefits. The New York City Planning Commission has already approved the plan but remains under review by the City Council. They are currently working out concerns about affordability, environmental impact, and the possible displacement of people and businesses.
